Map of Acadia in 1609

Map of the Colony of Louisiana (New France)- note the area south of Canada was referred to as Lower Louisiana. Note the French forts.... many of our ancestors were stationed at these forts and accompaning settlements.

France 1635.... the time When Robert Giffard's Company 'The Hundred Associates' had left France, settled in Quebec, and those members were granted large tracts of land, in turn, they were to solict settlers to work their lands, and build the towns. Many of us do have Acadaian ancstors, who came to the area referred to as Acadia  or Nova Scotia, who were settled and developed this area for 3 or more generations until the English began deporting them....

  1. A note about Maps..... they are only as accuracte as the person who drew them. When the United States completed the Louisiana Purchase, there was no accurate map and there was a vague consensus on the western boundary (did you happen to notice the map indicatingthe NEUTRAL TERRITORY) ... this is because the Managers of the Land Companies that were trying to develop and colonize the areas, as well as the Military leaders, had a tendancy to, shall we say, embellish a bit!

One of the first orders of business after the Louisiana Purchase was completed, was to send out surveyors, indian scouts, and other trained individuals.

One of whom is another distant relative of mine Dr. John Sibley, who was stationed in Natchitoches. I read a book form his 1807 field notes documenting the daily activities of the Indians. It was interesting!

You can go online and google/search Chronicaling America and type in search terms and read or print for free, many historical books that chronical the development of America.
